I am sure the title of this post must have got you into this to read. If you are running your own Blog/site then you must know about the term called as Link Building. I would say that links are web as they are really spread out everywhere in the so called internet world. If you are a webmaster than you would calculate them as a food to the other sites and if you are an ordinary user then you would say them as a link to others. The same thing but defined in two different ways. There are bunch of people who ask me about the future of web and I always reply them that it will be dominated by links. Here is a simple overview of link building and the things that should not be done anytime.
What is link building?

Links without the anchor text are also counted but they have very less value. There are two types of links, one is a dofollow link and the other is a nofollow link.

When you are buying or exchanging links the main thing to be noted is the niche of the site. Do not ever exchange a link with a health site for a tech site as this is of no use. Google spider never considers or values a link from the opposite niches. So it is better to choose the niche and exchange the links.
The next important thing that you must look when exchanging links is the number of outbound links. You can manually check the number of outbound links from the site before exchange. If the number of outbound links is more then your links value will get reduced.
You must use a free backlink checker tool or a simple Google search to find out the number of inbound links to the other site. If the number of inbound links is more then your link automatically gets an upper hand and a good value as well.
It is always advised to make the link building process naturally. Do not build links of only dofollow as spiders will penalize your site. It is also advised to build some nofollow links to make the process look natural.
