Plan
The most important part of the planning phase is picking a topic for your site. You should have adequate knowledge of the information you will be sharing on your site and you should like talking about it. Be specific! If your topic is very broad it will limit your audience. You want to attract internet users who are searching for what you specifically have to offer. Also, remember that you will have a lot of competition out there as the internet is vast and seemingly endless, so take time to plan what you want your site to be about and what you want it to express. You should have a clear idea of the purpose of your site and the image you want to project. Additionally, knowing ahead of time what functionality (such as accepting payments) you want the site to have will greatly help the creation process.
Design and Build
There are generally three ways you can go to design and build your site. The first option is software to do it yourself. Some popular design software programs include Dreamweaver, Coffecup, and Frontpage, however there are many options out there so shop around for the best fit for your budget and technical skills. The second option for site design is the free site builder available from your web host. Most hosts provide some sort of application that will allow you to use their templates to build simple sites yourself. The third option, and one that often works best for more complex sites, is to use an outside vendor or website designer. This may be cost prohibitive for some users, but these professionals can help you design a site that can house a huge variety of options including shopping, the ability to take payments, the ability to create online polls and discussion boards, etc. The more complex the site the more advantages to having a designer help you design and build what you need and want to provide.
