Is Free Web Hosting Really Free?

Posted on November 4th, 2009 by admin  |  No Comments »

Is free web hosting really free? On the quest for cheap hosting, what could be cheaper right? Well, as the old saying goes, ‘Nothing in life is free,’ and free web hosting is no different. It may not cost you money up front, but if you plan on having a serious website, it will cost you in the long run.

How can free web hosting be bad? Let me count the ways:

•    Advertising: Yes the free web hosting is free, but they more times than not will litter your site with tons of ads. Along with banners, you may also have pop-ups too. Nothing is more agitating to a potential customer than dealing with this stuff.
•    No credibility: Because your site is being hosted for free, this will more than likely be advertised in some way by the hosing company. This gives you less than adequate credibility with potential customers and they may click off your site as fast as they clicked on.
•    Search engines ignore you: The goal for any website should be to get listed high on the search engines. This is much harder with free hosting as many of the search engines will simply ignore your website because it is hosted for free.

Now I could go on all day, but I think you get the point.

Remember though, there are plenty of companies out there that offer cheap web hosting and can still give you excellent service. No, they won’t be free, but when you look at the facts of what you get with a free hosing service and what it can cost your website, is it really free?

Drawbacks to Free Web Hosting

What’s better than cheap web hosting? Free web hosting of course. Well now, wait just a minute, maybe it is not as good as it sounds. Could this be? What are some of the drawbacks of free web hosting and how bad can it be it’s free.

The word free will attract even the most savvy web designers but this is certainly a case where you get what you pay for. Here are some of the goodies you can look forward to with free web hosting:

•    Slower download time.
•    Advertisements on your pages – like all over them.-
•    Usually have to use a sub-domain instead of your own.
•    Limited to the amount of space you can use.

I’ll admit it, nothing is better than getting a real value for nothing. But this simply isn’t the case for web hosting. The amount of advertisements and slow download time will surely cast off many visitors that otherwise would stay. Add to that the fact that you probably have to use a sub-domain like www.freewebhosting.com/yoursite and who the heck is going to find your site anyhow?

Probably the biggest drawback though is the limited space. This does not allow your website any room to grow. However, that’s what you get for free these days.

Nothing in life is free anymore except for love and you should try to host your website on love either. Save yourself a ton of headaches and get off your wallet just a bit and pay for a real web hosting service. There are so many affordable ones available today that it is really silly not too.

Free Web Hosting—What Do You Mean by ‘Free’?

These days, everyone is hoping to get something for free. Whether you’re trying to cut costs in your existing business or looking to start a new one on a small budget, any free service will be mighty tempting.

Free web hosting is just one way to cut costs in your business. You get a website that’s all your own and for less than cents on the dollar. But is free web hosting really free? Some free web host users would say that this budget friendly service comes with a cost.

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for and nothing is free. Free web hosting is no exception. For the most part, free web hosting gets you an address and that’s it. Don’t expect technical support or additional service from your provider. You can also look forward to limited storage space, limited site design, and limited functionality. In a word, free web hosting gets you limited everything.

For your basic website, free web hosting is a great way to go, especially if you’re test driving the whole website thing. But for a competitive website that’s dressed to impress, you’ll want to shell out a few bucks from your budget for a paid web host.
