Using Avatars with Your Web Development

Posted on June 29th, 2011 by Jason  |  No Comments »

A great way to set your website apart from the millions and millions of others that are online today is by using an avatar. An avatar is like a host for your website that can say and do whatever you program it to do and will be able to successfully lead your potential customers wherever it is you want them to go.

Avatars can be made to look like a cartoon, or to look exactly like you. In fact, you can even get an avatar that is you, using a pre-recorded message and a pre-recorded video that you have shot beforehand.

When a potential customer finds your website, they will be greeted with the avatar popping up and delivering the message of your choice. This message can be a welcome message, a message to look in a certain place for deals, or whatever you want it to be. You can even have your avatar deliver a different message on each one of your web pages.

While using an avatar is a great way to be unique with your website, you may want to consider implementing different ones as your web development goes along. You can begin with a more animated avatar and see what the feedback is. If you find that you are getting great feedback, then you may want to hire a company that can help you create an avatar that either uses you or another ‘real’ person as the model.

Web development has certainly come a long way and avatars that can deliver a special message are proof of that. The online world is one that is incredibly competitive so you have to do whatever you can to ensure your website is a cut above the rest. With a talking and moving avatar as a host, you can have the type of website that everyone talks about and really enjoys visiting.

Web Hosting Consideration – Speed

There are a lot of things that you will want to take into consideration when you are selecting a web hosting company, but one thing that should always be looked at is speed. Speed can mean the difference of a web surfer staying on your website to eventually buy, or simply clicking the little red ‘x’ on the top right hand corner of your website and then finding your competitor.

Speed has everything to do with how fast your web pages will load up. If you have a web hosting company that doesn’t offer a lot of speed, then you pages will load slowly. The problem with a slow loading page is that nobody wants to wait around for them and the end result is usually losing the potential customer before they ever get to view your website.

There are many things that can affect the speed of your website, such as a lot of pictures, videos, or using programs such as Flash. However, if your web hosting company is a good one, they will be able to handle anything you can throw at them.

If you are not sure how much speed you will be able to get from a web hosting company that you may be interested in, you need to ask. However, don’t just take their word for it. Find out some of the other websites that are hosted with the company and see for yourself just how fast, or slow, the web pages load.

You will no doubt put a lot of time and effort into creating the website of your dreams so the least you can do is ensure that you host it with a web hosting company that will have it loading in an instant. After all, even the best looking website is one that will not work if nobody stays around to see it due to a total lack of speed.

Web Hosting Consideration – Uptime

When your website is up and running smoothly life is good so, it makes sense that you will want to find a web hosting company that can ensure your web site will be up and running at almost all times. This is known as uptime and if you go with a web hosting company that has an uptime that is less than adequate, you will pay for it in lost business.

Fortunately almost every single web hosting company out nowadays will boast at least a 99 percent uptime. This means that you can expect your website to be up and running about 99 percent of the time. While this may sound wonderful, it is in fact, not all that good when it comes to uptime.

Considering the fact that there are many in the web hosting game that can say with honesty that they have a 99.9 percent uptime, going with a web hosting company that only has a 99 percent uptime doesn’t seem like the best move to make. Remember, when your website is down, you aren’t making any money, no matter how short of a time span that may be.

With a web hosting company that can say they have an uptime of 99.9 percent, you can bet that even if your website does encounter any downtime, it will likely be fixed before you know about the problem. Because you can find web hosting companies that have these almost perfect uptimes for the same price as the others, there is no reason not to choose a web hosting company with a better uptime.

Your website is your online business. You wouldn’t close your offline store at certain intervals would you? By going with a web hosting company that has a great uptime record, you can ensure that your online business will almost always have its doors open to all potential customers as they find you.

Watch for Web Hosting Mark-Up

Posted on June 9th, 2011 by Jason  |  No Comments »

No matter what type of website you have, you will almost always have to pay for web hosting and that is just an accepted fact if you want to have a website. However, what you don’t have to accept, or put up with, is a web hosting mark-up.

Web hosting mark-up is when a web hosting company uses some other company’s web hosting services for your website and simply marks up the price. For example, Company A charges $9.95 per month for web hosting, but you use Company B, who charges $14.95 per month for web hosting. Little do you know that you are simply paying a $5.00 per month mark-up for Company B’s web hosting services, when you could use Company A and receive the same service, only for a cheaper price.

This is often the result of someone not wanting to go with the cheapest web hosting company out there and thus they choose one that is a little more expensive. However, many web hosting companies are wise to this and simply charge a mark-up so they can make some easy money.

If you suspect that you may be paying a web hosting mark-up, find out from your web hosting company if that is the case. Ask them if they host your website, or have it hosted elsewhere. If the answer is elsewhere, see if you can find your where that is and then perhaps check into using that service for your web hosting needs.

While you do have to pay for web hosting in almost every website instance, you don’t have to pay the ‘middle man.’ Be informed and do your homework when you are in the process of selecting your web hosting company so that you don’t accidentally pay for web hosting mark-up that simply doesn’t need to be paid for.
